~ About Us ~
Who We Are
Salem Reformed Church is a local body of believers seeking to serve their covenant God in Rome and the surrounding communities. Our goal is to bring "every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ" (2 Cor. 10:5c) by proclaiming (and living out in our lives) the whole counsel of God in our area and even to the uttermost parts of the earth. Our purpose is: to continually seek ways to bring people to serve the Living Christ; to discover the spiritual gifts God has given us and learn to use them in a meaningful ministry; to offer the Lord worship (see below) that is faithful to the Scriptures and sincere in spirit; and to apply the claims of Jesus Christ to every area of life. At this time we are a sister church of Messiah's Covenant Community Church in Brooklyn, New York. Salem Reformed stands in the Reformed tradition and is a candidate church in the Confederation of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC)
We are, unashamedly, Calvinistic and Reformed in our theology. Our doctrine that we confess is best expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms , as well as the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dordt. These standards are true statements of our doctrines and beliefs. They all are subordinate to the Word of God (which alone is infallible and inerrant): the ultimate and final authority for our faith and practice. We encourage God's covenant people to be in His Word daily. For a daily Bible reading program, click on this link.
All the rage as of late has been over the so-called Federal Vision theology. For our view (or at least the pastor's view) click here.
Our Worship of the Triune Godhead
Our church emphasizes the covenant and our relationship to our covenant Godhead. That means, among other things, that we gather together as God's covenant people, as part of His Bride, to worship Him. We highly esteem the covenant community that binds us together by the love of Christ and geographic proximity. We value the family as God's foundational building block for the church and society. That means, as well, that we gather together on the Lord's Day to worship as covenant families as the family of God. We believe covenant children are part of the church family and ought to be treated accordingly. That means our children are part of our worship/covenant renewal service. See here for our view on children and worship.
Our basic order of worship:
God Calls Us to Worship
God Cleanses Us
God Consecrates Us by His Word
God Communes with Us
God Commissions Us
We observe the Lord's Table (God Communes With Us) each Lord's Day. This includes our entire covenant community and visitors who have been baptized and are under the authority of Christ and His Body, the Church. See here for our view on paedocommunion/credocommunion issues.
